Anshu Loiwal takes us through her journey of designing her home, along with her husband Anurag Loiwal, by reflecting the local flavours alongside displaying some unique traits stemming from her roots.

I grew up in my ancestral home in a traditional neighbourhood in Allahabad. I especially loved my garden there, where we spent our days playing, studying and just being mischievous. There are so many beautiful memories that I have of that home and I knew that when I get married and move houses, I would find ways to bring those memories into my new home, wherever it may be. Luckily for me, post marriage, I moved into a new city, Ajmer, in 2002, and into an elite neighbourhood situated in the famous Mayo College area. My excitement knew no bounds when we purchased a home with a garden, just as I had envisioned. On one of my first trips back to Allahabad, I brought a lotus plant from my home there and placed it in my garden here in Ajmer, and whenever I look at it, I feel a connection to my roots. That was just the start of uniting my past and present.

We moved into our new home and thus started our endeavour to design and decorate. It was paramount for me to retain our cultural roots and the same time, be contemporary in my outlook. When it came to design, we enlisted the help of an architect to do up the basic structure of the house. But other than that, channelled all my creativity to beautify every nook and corner myself with the help of my daughter.
Our first priority was of course, the living room. We wanted a space which was open, well ventilated and naturally bright, a room where we all could spend time together as a family, entertain guests and generally have a wonderful time. An elegant sofa set and a coffee table to match is the focal point of this space. We love putting our feet up and relaxing here, watching our favourite shows and catching up on each others’ lives.

There’s no better place to freely express your creativity than in your own home, and it was the same for me. I have always been intrigued and interested in home decor right from childhood and the new house was the perfect canvas for me to experiment and execute my ideas. I don’t miss a single opportunity to visit the various exhibitions which keep sprouting up all around Ajmer, especially during Diwali, and it is here that I scout for quirky elements to bring home.
Coming to my husband, Anurag is a CA by profession and has his own office space in the house, separated by an entrance of its own. Since I have to often travel and have a full-time job, having his office attached to our home is a blessing! He is always around to watch over our daughters, has the privacy to work efficiently and has his own space to decorate as he wishes. Having a home-office is something many professionals wish to have, but having a separate entrance/exit allows him to cut off from work-mode when he comes home.
Over time, we decided that we would like to expand our home and availed of a loan to build another storey. The ability to be able to craft our home at our own will was an empowering feeling.

Another thing about me is that I’m very passionate about painting, and my younger daughter has followed in my footsteps and taken up this hobby. I find it so relaxing to see the colours run riot to depict a medley of emotions and this makes me feel like I have the power to create whatever I choose to. Some of my paintings are displayed in our living room. A special wall, adorned by marble stones sourced from Kishangarh (Asia’s largest marble market) enclosed by a wooden frame accentuates and makes the painting stand out.

One day, it dawned on my husband and I that now that the kids are a little grown-up, they will need their own room, and like most little girls, they love pink. This pink-painted bedroom is more than just a kids’ room, it is more like a playschool – complete with bulletin boards, a toy corner and a library to keep them engaged. This place is their domain, lit up by mood lighting and filled with all the things they love and enjoy.

Our home is a true reflection of our identities and also a constant source of happiness. The feeling of belongingness in such a beautiful environment, which is full of love, happiness and warmth, is something we cherish every single day.
